The Derwent Valley Concert Band is the ‘flag-ship’ ensemble for the organisation and is suitable for musicians who wish to rehearse and perform a wide variety of high quality repertoire. This band aims for musical excellence in performance thereby requiring members to commit to daily home practice and regular attendance at weekly rehearsals.
The DVCB performs throughout the year at many community events including Australia Day and ANZAC Day, presents a concert series in venues around Hobart and competes in both state and national band championships. In addition, since its very early days, the band has toured internationally on a regular basis. The 10 tours (to date) have visited 15 countries with the band rehearsing and performing with local ensembles, participating in competitions and presenting concerts – most often with a strong emphasis on Australian compositions.
Support for local composers through the commissioning and performance of new works is seen as an important role for the band. New music has been premièred in concerts at home and overseas with several pieces receiving world première performances at the Mid-Europe Wind Orchestra and Music Educators Festival (Schladming, Austria).
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday night (late January through to Christmas) from 7.00pm to 9.30pm at our band rooms in the Memorial Hall, Circle Street, New Norfolk.
