Sarah Okenyo

Sarah’s history with the Derwent Valley Concert Band goes back to its inception as her father was Layton Hodgetts OAM – the founding conductor. She officially joined in 1997 on clarinet and has never looked back – citing the entire band as an extended family. Sarah went on to study film in New York City and Sydney. She has appeared in several notable projects, including The Gloaming (Stan) and Jennifer Kent’s feature The Nightingale, which premiered in competition at the Venice International Film Festival 2018.

In 2019 Sarah was a founding board member of Derwent Valley Arts (DVA) and leads the DVA Film Society. She has been honing her skills behind the camera by working as videographer for several community groups and businesses, and is currently working on her first documentary feature film: ‘A Town Without Music’, which is about the history of the Derwent Valley Concert Band. It is supported by Screen Tasmania, Documentary Australia, and is being produced by Tom Zubrycki.
